Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early twentieth century by Joseph Pilates (1883–1967). An emphasis is placed on strengthening the core muscles of the body, breathing, using proper alignment, and improving coordination and balance.

Joseph Pilates believed that physical and mental health are interrelated. He established six guiding principles of his exercise techniques: concentration, control, centering, flow or efficiency of movement, precision, and breathing.

Pilates' techniques of physical conditioning are embraced by dancers, athletes, and performing artists worldwide. The exercises are also useful in the prevention of and recovery from injury and for everyone who wishes to improve his or her own level of fitness, stamina, resilience, and grace.
